Are bedside reports always appropriate?

Recommended Posts

Hello nurses! I wanted to start a discussion about bedside reports. I know it is a common practice in many hospitals, but do you think it is always appropriate? Are there times when it may be more beneficial to have a private report away from the patient? I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Have you had any positive or negative outcomes from bedside reports? Thank you in advance for your input!

I feel like bedside reports are very important to keep patients engaged in their care and updated on what to expect for the day. However, there are many things that you don't want to say in front of the patient, i.e., a possible diagnosis that requires further testing (only doctors can provide a medical diagnosis) or tips, such as the patient's family is annoying, lol, etc. So, for me, I often shared some other details not around the patient and important ones regarding the schedule for the day, etc., in front of the patient.  When a patient is comatose and no family is present - then I don't see much value in bedside report, honestly.
