Laila Ighani
August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). Even among nurses, immunization is a controversial topic. What are your thoughts and experiences with immunization? Have you chosen to vaccinate your own children? Do you recommend vaccination to your patients and their families?
Miranda Belcher
As a pediatric nurse, I have seen way too many vaccine reactions in young patients, and I never push my own beliefs or the CDC's advice on patients and their families, I advocate for patients and family members to receive all the information regarding positives and benefits, and I support them to make their own decisions. I am also a huge advocate for using the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), which honestly many nurses do not even realize that they are legally required to fill out if a patient is admitted for anything after vaccination. According to VAERS "We encourage you to report any clinically important medical event or health problem that occurs after vaccination. Report the adverse event even if you are not sure if it was a result of vaccination. Healthcare professionals are required by law to report certain adverse events."
