This past weekend, World Alzheimer’s Day, held annually on September 21st, aimed to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding Alzheimer's disease. For nurses, this day reminds them of the crucial role they play in supporting patients and families through compassionate care and early diagnosis.

 

Alzheimer's impacts millions worldwide, and there is no known cure, making the need for specialized care more important than ever. Nurses can make a difference by advocating for education, participating in memory care training, and promoting brain health. Let’s continue to support those living with Alzheimer's and work towards breakthroughs in treatment and care.

Yes, it is heartbreaking. So, I'm all for promoting brain health. We are all more likely to make important lifestyle changes, such as vigorous exercise, healthy diet, and social connections, when we understand possible improvements and the risk factors involved.

My grandmother died of Alzheimer's. She had it 14 years and average life expectancy is 7 years following diagnosis, so I am grateful that I had that time with her.
