Facility orientation?

Sandra RN

Question

Hi Everyone! Sandra here, new to the Nursa community. Great to be here!   I do have a few questions though…

Are nurses oriented to the facility the first day so we know where everything is?

Are we allowed to go ahead of time and get familiar with the layout of the building, med room, and other things we need to know before we start. I just feel a lot of time is wasted just trying to figure out things at the beginning of shift and take away from patient care if we don’t know where things are or how their charting system works, etc… I would appreciate any help with answering these questions. Thank you! 😊

Welcome welcome!! 🤗

This is a great question @Sandra RN! We encourage you to go early to get oriented and ask questions.  While each facility is different you can also call ahead for more clarification on these details. We definitely want you to feel prepared to provide your best patient care.

@Kate Olsen @Montana Hiltbrand do you guys have any more useful tips here?

Nursa does not provide badges. We encourage you to upload a profile photo to your Nursa account and add in your drivers license! Also, you have the ability to contact the facilities from the job card and ask all the questions you need in order to feel prepared. I hope this helps 🙂 We are so happy that you are here! If you have other questions on getting started, please schedule a call with a clinician success specialist here: https://calendly.com/gtm-3/onboarding-call

Welcome @Rachel Dean LPN! Facilities are definitely the best to ask if there is any kind of orientation or if you can arrive early to get oriented. I would encourage you to arrive early or to call ahead to make sure you are prepared to start the shift.

Every facility can be different, so it is encouraged (especially the first couple shifts) to contact the facility to know what to expect.

Have you done local prn shift before Rachel?

I have found in all my years (i think its about 30?!??) that all the places are basically the same. You can ask at the front desk where you will be working. If they dont have the schedule, they will direct you to where it is. Once you sign in, you can ask whoever is right there where that section/hall is. You can ask whatever questions you may have to whoever it is that you are relieving. You will more than likely already been given your sign in info for charting. If you havent, dont let that other person leave without them directing you to whoever can give it to you. My go to is always the Nursa app. There is a messaging icon that will put you in contact with staffing and usually the Director of Nurses. They all know you are new and they know what you need. The questions I find most helpful is where are the  bathrooms and any code needed to get out/in and try to get a phone number for someone in house in case you have any questions. Most people are very nice and they are happy that you have come in to help. Without you, their jobs would be much more difficult. They want you to feel comfortable so that you choose to come back. Just put on a smile. You are going to be there for awhile and before its over, you will have figured everything out. Try not to complain and have fun.

Also to note...the shift start times allow for enough time in order to get report and to get yourself situated. Med pass usually doesnt start for a good hour or more. When in Rome, do as the Romans do...take a look around and see what the others are doing, and do that too.
